I love extended solos and I've been thinking about them a bit. A good jazz improv extended solo has a timeless quality in the sense that it exists outside of time.
At some point after the musician has played three or four choruses the audience realizes that it's always different and that the soloist could go on forever never playing the same thing. And then they forget that it ever started. And then they feel like it will go on forever.
And then, like all things, it ends.
